Recording for iMovie with a Web Camera and Different Microphone

This morning I was asked to record a quick video for a company. Nothing special, just sit down at my desk and talk about a specific topic for 30 seconds or so.

If this were for a client, I’d set up and do a professional shoot with my videographer, who does an amazing job on lighting and has incredible equipment. However, this was just a quick shot and didn’t need that time and resource investment.

Recording from the laptop webcam isn’t always optimal since you have to maneuver your laptop around to get the right angles and everything… so I decided to use my Logitech web camera instead. It’s also mounted on a little sound absorption pod that I recently purchased so I thought I could get both a nice video and great audio.

If you’re interest in this setup, here’s what I have (my affiliate links are included):

  • Lyx Pro VRI-10 Portable Sound Absorbing Booth.
  • Logitech C930e 1080P HD Video Webcam – 90-Degree Extended View
  • Shure MV51 Digital Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone
  • The headphones are there for when I’m podcasting via Skype.

Can I use iMovie with a USB Web Camera?

  • No! iMovie won’t connect to an external USB web camera to record into the platform. I actually never realized that until today… it’s nuts!
  • Sites where I read about the issue recommended just using Photo Booth which is built into OSX and can connect to an external camera. One problem: With Photo Booth, you can’t connect to a different microphone!

As a result, I wound up utilizing Quicktime Player to record the video. With Quicktime, you can easily select the video and audio source:

Then I just imported the video into iMove where I could make my edits.

It’s really surprising that both Photo Booth and iMovie don’t have the capabilities to select both your video and audio sources.
